Tooth Extraction Aftercare
— How to Heal Well

Good aftercare in the first days after an extraction helps you heal quickly and comfortably. Here's what to do — and what to avoid.

Caring for the socket after an extraction

Right after an extraction, a blood clot forms in the socket to protect it and start healing. In the first 24 hours, avoid rinsing vigorously, smoking, drinking through a straw, and hot foods — all of which can dislodge that clot and delay healing.

Bite gently on gauze to control any bleeding, use a cold compress for swelling, take pain relief as advised, and stick to soft foods. From the next day, gentle warm salt-water rinses keep the area clean. If you had a tooth removed, we'll also discuss replacing it when you've healed.

After Extraction Care — your questions answered

How long does an extraction take to heal?
The socket's surface heals over about one to two weeks, with the first few days most important for aftercare. Complete bone healing underneath takes longer.
What is a dry socket?
It's a painful condition where the protective blood clot is lost too early, exposing the bone. Avoiding smoking, straws and vigorous rinsing in the first days helps prevent it.
What can I eat after an extraction?
Soft, cool foods for the first day or two — avoid hot, hard or chewy foods and chew on the other side. We'll give you specific advice.
When should I contact the dentist?
If you have worsening pain after a few days, heavy bleeding that won't settle, or signs of infection like swelling and fever, contact us promptly.
